Amy Johnson is a food studies scholar and wine culturist.

| about |

Food is a universal language. As a Graduate Student at Boston University, I use the field of gastronomy to engage in dialogue with various cultural intermediaries, understanding the rich histories and traditions that exist within our world. Given that food and wine are natural pairings, my primary focus lies within the emerging field of critical wine studies. Through my studies, I hope to use education as a form of connection and empowerment, allowing consumers to challenge preconceived notions and bring fresh perspectives to the world of wine.

My scholarship focuses on the fields of food and wine studies, cultural traditions, agroecology, viticulture (grape-growing), climate change, sustainability & environmentalism, and more recently, community gardens & urban agriculture. I hold a B.A. in both Journalism and Anthropology from the University of Arizona. I am currently working towards my M.A. in Gastronomy at Boston University. I hold a Level 2 Award in Wine (with merit) from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust and an Artisanal Cheese Certificate from Boston University’s Food and Wine Programs. In my free time, I am an active member and former Senior Vice President of the Fenway Victory Gardens, a 7.5 acre community garden here in Boston. I also serve as the primary coordinator for the organization’s food donation program, which grows, harvests, and donates fresh produce to the Women’s Lunch Place of Boston, a local women’s shelter. These academic designations and experiences largely inform my research as a food studies scholar.
